Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late
So, I’m sitting here on my couch. It’s comfy. My box of tissue is sitting right next to me and there are random tissues strewn all about me. My body hurts so badly that I can’t even sit in my office chair to type this. Guess what I forgot to get! You got it - an Elderberry Kit from Jar.
I do marketing for a living and I had a client that needed me at a trade show with him, so I flew to California with him. I packed my mask, I took anti-bacterial spray and I left my elderberry behind at Jar. As Viv (Julia Roberts) said in Pretty Woman, “Big mistake. HUGE!”
What’s The Big Deal About Elderberry?
Well, the big deal is that elderberry is one of the few natural remedies that actually has science to back up its effectiveness. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, “Elderberry has been used in folk medicine for centuries to treat influenza, colds and sinusitis, and has been reported to have antiviral activity against influenza and herpes simplex. We investigated the efficacy and safety of oral elderberry syrup for treating influenza A and B infections. Sixty patients (aged 18-54 years) suffering from influenza-like symptoms for 48 h or less were enrolled in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study during the influenza season of 1999-2000 in Norway. Patients received 15 ml of elderberry or placebo syrup four times a day for 5 days, and recorded their symptoms using a visual analogue scale. Symptoms were relieved on average 4 days earlier and use of rescue medication was significantly less in those receiving elderberry extract compared with placebo. Elderberry extract seems to offer an efficient, safe and cost-effective treatment for influenza…”
So Does Elderberry Help Prevent Sickness?
While it’s hard to pin down a study that can prove prevention, I can tell you my own personal experience (and use a little common sense.) The study above and numerous other studies state that elderberry does help boost immunity. If you took a dose of it every day, with a heightened immune system, I (who am not a doctor) would assume that it would be good for prevention.
I have personally (sans my trip to San Diego) taken 2,000mg of L-Lysine prior to flying and have also taken 2-3 small doses per day of elderberry syrup so to keep healthy. From a girl who used to get chronic sinus infections to the girl who now only gets 1-2 a year, for me, the elderberry syrup is a definite win.
